Green Pool Got You Down? Pool Runnings to the Rescue!

Cleaning Your Green Pool in Sydney

Uh oh! Did your pool pull a disappearing act and turn into a swampy green monster overnight? 😱 Don't worry, mate, we've all been there! We all experience it, particularly when the temperature rises.

Now, that green tinge is usually caused by those pesky little algae critters throwing a party in your pool. They just love warm water and a dip in the chlorine-free zone. But don't stress; you can kick those party crashers to the curb and get your pool back to its sparkling best without draining it!

1. Rescue Your Pool Robot

Firstly, you should remove your trusty robot, the automatic pool cleaner, from the pool. It can't do its job properly in a green pool, and you don't want it getting clogged up with algae. Gently lift it out and set it aside for now.

2. Pool Filter Checkup

Next, head over to your pool equipment. In most Aussie backyards, you'll find this tucked away in a pump shed or a dedicated corner of the yard. Make sure to thoroughly inspect your filter. Check for any leaks, cracks, or blockages. Make sure the pressure gauge is reading within the normal range. A happy filter is essential for a clean and healthy pool!

3. Brush It Like You Mean It

Now for the hands-on part! Grab your trusty pool brush and give those walls and floor a good scrub. Pay close attention to corners, steps, and any areas where algae tends to accumulate. We want to dislodge all that algae and send it swirling into the water where the filter can grab it. Don't forget to rake up any leaves or debris from the bottom of the pool and clear out the skimmer baskets (those little containers built into the side of your pool).

4. Backwash Time

It's time to give your filter a well-deserved spa day! This means performing a backwash to flush out all the gunk it has collected. The backwash setting is usually found on your filter's multiport valve. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific filter model.

5. Filter On, Pump On!

Once the backwash is complete, switch the multiport valve back to the "filter" position. Now, activate your pool pump and allow it to perform its magical tasks! The pump will circulate the water through the filter, eliminating dead algae and other debris, progressively restoring your pool to its pristine condition.

Dealing with a Seriously Green Pool? Don't Panic!

Okay, so maybe your pool isn't just a little green. Maybe it's more like a scene from "Creature from the Black Lagoon." Don't worry, we've got you covered! Here's how to tackle different levels of green pool mayhem:

Dealing with a Seriously Green Pool? Don't Panic!

Okay, so maybe your pool isn't just a little green. Maybe it's more like a scene from "Creature from the Black Lagoon." Don't worry, we've got you covered! Here's how to tackle different levels of green pool mayhem:

For a Dark Green Pool (Where You Can't Even See the Bottom!)

pH Perfect: Algae love to party in unbalanced water, so getting your pH right is the first step to shutting that party down. Grab your water testing kit (or pop into your local pool shop for a quick test) and check the pH level. Aim for a pH between 7.2 and 7.6. If it's too high or too low, you'll need to adjust it with a pH increaser or decreaser. Follow the instructions on the product label carefully.

Purify and Annihilate: Now it's time to bring in the big guns! You'll need a powerful pool purifier and a quality algaecide to tackle that serious green. These chemicals work together to kill the algae and clear up the water. Follow the product instructions for dosage, but generally, you'll need a larger dose for a seriously green pool. (Pro tip: If you have a vinyl pool, dissolve the purifier in a bucket of water before adding it to the pool to avoid staining.)

Filter Power: Your pool filter is your best friend in this fight. Make sure it's clean and in good working order. Once you've added the chemicals, keep your filter running continuously for at least 24 hours, if not longer. The water might turn milky white at first – that's a good sign! It means the purifier is working its magic and the algae are starting to die off.

Phosphate Patrol: Once the water starts to clear up, it's time to test for phosphates. Phosphates are like a delicious buffet for algae, so if you have high levels, they can quickly fuel another algae bloom. Use a phosphate remover to eliminate them and prevent a green comeback.

For a Mid-Range Green Pool (Still Green, But You Can See the Bottom)

Dynamic Duo: You'll still need a purifier and algaecide, but you might not need as much as for a dark green pool. Again, follow the product instructions for the correct dosage.

Filter Time: Run your filter for a solid 24 hours to help circulate the chemicals and clear up the water.

For a Light Green Pool (Just a Hint of Green)

Triple Threat: A smaller dose of purifier, some long-life algaecide, and a chlorine tab should do the trick to knock out that minor algae growth.

Filter Flow: Keep that filter running for 24 hours to circulate the chemicals and clear the water.

Important Notes on Green Pools from Your Friends at Pool Runnings:

Safety First: Always follow the instructions on your pool chemical labels carefully. Wear appropriate safety gear, like gloves and eye protection, when handling pool chemicals.

Be Patient: Clearing up a green pool takes time. Don't expect instant results. Be patient and consistent with your treatment.

Call in the Pros: If you're unsure about any of these steps or if your pool isn't responding to treatment, it's always best to consult a pool professional. We're here to help!

Don't forget the filter, love!

Cartridge filters: Keep an eye on that pressure gauge. If it gets too high, give your cartridge a rinse.

All filters: After your pool's back to blue, show your filter some love with a good clean using Filter Cleaner.

Want to avoid the green monster altogether?

Skim it real good: Daily skimming keeps leaves and debris from sinking and causing trouble.

Water checkup: Take your pool for a monthly checkup at your local pool shop. Early detection is key!

Chlorine is king: Keep your chlorine levels in check, and those algae won't stand a chance.

Remember, a clean pool is a happy pool! But if you're ever in doubt or just want to relax and leave it to the pros, give Pool Runnings a shout. We're always happy to help! 😉
